R.I.I. North America Inc. (“RII”) is a privately held Calgary-based upstream oil company that owns the North American intellectual property rights for the patented STRIP (Solvent Thermal Resource Innovations Process) enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology. RII is committed to improving the efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of thermal enhanced oil recovery by implementing STRIP.

To date, over $60 million has been spent developing the STRIP technology. RII is supported by top-tier investors including KLP Enterprises (the family office of Michael Vlock and Karen Pritzker), Sprott Resource Partnership, and, through a strategic alliance with RII, Praxair Canada Inc.

Alfred (Fred) Schneider
Chairman, President and CEO

Fred Schneider is the founder of RII and the inventor of the STRIP enhanced oil recovery technology. Mr. Schneider has over 35 years of experience in the oil and gas industry across various project management and operational roles from project scoping and design to field level construction. Mr. Schneider has extensive experience in the heavy and conventional enhanced oil recovery sector as well as the upgrading and refining industry.

Jeffrey Schneider
Executive Vice President and Corporate Secretary

Jeff Schneider is a founder of RII and currently serves as Executive Vice President responsible for day to day oversight of RII’s corporate activities. Prior to joining RII, Mr. Schneider worked as an investment banker in the New York office of the Lehman Brothers’ and Barclays Capital’s Power and Energy Group. Mr. Schneider is a graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont and The London School of Economics in England.

Martin Barry
Chief Financial Officer

Martin Barry is a Chartered Accountant with over 20 years of experience providing Audit and Assurance services to industry clients with a specific focus on both public and private reporting requirements. Mr. Barry is currently engaged as a partner at Buchanan Barry LLP, a Chartered Accounting firm in Calgary. Mr. Barry graduated from the University of Calgary in 1979 with a Bachelor of Commerce and obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1982.

Barb Laplante, P.Geo.
Vice President – Geosciences

Barb LaPlante joined RII in 2014 to lead the company’s geological and reservoir evaluation and exploitation strategy initiatives. Ms. LaPlante has over 35 years of experience in the Canadian Heavy Oil Industry including senior management experience in exploration, exploitation, geological evaluation, resource acquisition and joint venture negotiations. She was involved as a team member on several of Husky’s EOR pilots and waterfloods. Barb has worked for several companies including Husky Energy, Waseca Energy, Stat Oil and Crew Energy. She is currently an active member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS) and the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG).

Eugene Christensen
Vice President – Engineering and Operations

Eugene Christensen joined RII in 2016 as Vice President, Engineering and Operations. Mr. Christensen has 33 years of executive, managerial and technical experience in the areas of production, exploitation, reservoir engineering, field operations, drilling and completions domestically and internationally. Most recently Mr. Christensen provided technical consulting services to companies in the oil and gas industry. Mr. Christensen’s executive experience includes 6 years as Vice President of Engineering for Bankers Petroleum and Vice President of Engineering at Flagship Energy. He served as Exploitation Manager at Anglo Albanian Petroleum and at Laricina Energy as General Manager of Asset overseeing the Grossmont carbonate thermal team. He has held senior engineering positions at Mark Resources, Koch Exploration Canada., and Husky Oil Operations. Mr. Christensen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta. He is an active member of APEGGA, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the Canadian Heavy Oil Association (CHOA).

Geoff Cano
Vice President – Corporate Development

Geoff Cano joined RII in 2013 to support the company with corporate finance and marketing initiatives. Previously the Director of Marketing for an international natural gas shipping company, Mr. Cano has experience in business development, corporate strategy, project finance and technology commercialization advisory roles for companies including oil and gas producers, energy research consultancies and gas transport technology developers.

Jonathan Yee
Senior Vice President – Business Development

Jonathan Yee joined RII in 2015 to support the company with business development and corporate finance initiatives. Prior to RII, Mr. Yee worked at Surveyor Capital (Citadel), SAC Capital Advisors and Global Infrastructure Partners, conducting due diligence and evaluating private and public markets investment opportunities in the energy industry. Mr. Yee also has capital markets experience as an investment banker in Lehman Brothers’ and Barclays Capital’s Power and Energy Group. Mr. Yee is a graduate of Columbia University in New York.

Independent Directors

Dr. John R. Lacey, P. Eng.
Independent Director and Chairman of the Governance and Compensation Committee

Dr. Lacey has over 50 years of industry experience, playing a significant role in the development of major global projects including the Northwest Shelf Pipeline, numerous Joint Ventures and contractual arrangements in Thailand, and gas storage projects in the North Sea. During his career he has advised a wide range of national and international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Dr. Lacey holds a B.Sc., Oil Technology (1st Class Honors) from London University; a Ph.D., Geology and Engineering from London University; and degrees in Petroleum Technology from the Royal School of Mines (1953) and Reservoir Engineering from Imperial College. He has received several academic and special honours, including a Watts Medal in Geology, an Institute of Petroleum Prize, an election to the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, a Geological Society Prize and has been made an Honorary Consul-General to Kingdom of Thailand. Dr. Lacey was elected to RII’s Board in 2008.


Larry Vadori, P.Eng.
Independent Director

Currently Senior Vice President Operations and Development for North West Upgrading, Mr. Vadori has over 30 years of industry experience across manufacturing operations, crude oil supply and the refining business, serving as Senior Vice President of Manufacturing and Commercial at BA Energy and as General Manager Oil Sands Growth and Technology for Shell Canada. Mr. Vadori was elected to RII’s Board in 2014.


Hank Petranik
Independent Director

Hank Petranik has over 35 years of energy industry experience with a focus on business development and marketing. Mr. Petranik is former Vice-President, LNG, CNG and Power Transmission for TransCanada from 2003 to August 2010. Mr. Petranik was elected to RII’s Board in 2014.


Arthur Einav
Independent Director

Currently General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Sprott Inc., Sprott Resource Corp. and Sprott Consulting, Mr. Einav also serves on the Board of Directors for Independence Contract Drilling, Inc. Mr. Einav was previously an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP, focussing on private debt and equity offerings, exchange offers, mergers and acquisitions and debt restructurings in a variety of industries. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree and a Masters in Business Administration from Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business, in addition to a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the New York State Bar. Mr. Einav was nominated to RII’s Board in 2015.
