Neilburg Pilot Project

The Neilburg Pilot Project is the first field test of the STRIP downhole steam generation technology. Having evaluated the technological performance of the process through years of computer modelling and bench-scale tests, RII, together with Rock Energy, began work on the first “Proof of Concept” field test late in 2013.

The Neilburg well site is located north of Neilburg Saskatchewan in the middle of a series of heavy oil properties operated by Rock Energy. An existing vertical CHOPS (Cold Heavy Oil Production with Sand) production well was converted in late 2013 to a STRIP injection well, with no modifications required to the existing casing. The injection well site was commissioned in early 2014, with start-up in March.

On March 7, the Neilburg site saw the first successful ignition of a downhole steam generator in a heavy oil reservoir. Throughout 2014, RII continued the “Proof of Concept” testing, achieving significant milestones related to the demonstration of process viability, mechanical reliability, combustion stability and process control.

Buzzard Pilot Project

The Buzzard Pilot Project is the first commercial scale production test of the STRIP downhole steam generation technology. Building on the success of the Neilburg pilot, where the technical viability of STRIP injection was demonstrated, the Buzzard project promises to demonstrate the production capabilities of the technology, and to confirm the environmental and economic benefits of downhole steam injection.

In 2015, RII acquired a 2.5 section field in the Buzzard area in western Saskatchewan over an extensive Lloydminster oil pool. In addition to taking over operatorship of existing conventional heavy oil wells, RII initiated a drilling program to build out a production well pattern offsetting a STRIP injector well for the production testing phase of the STRIP Pilot Project. The goal of the project is to test the response of a production-quality reservoir to STRIP injection, and to develop a reservoir management strategy to take advantage of the benefits of downhole steam injection.

The Pilot Project is scheduled for start-up in Q2, 2016, and will run throughout the year.
